What is AFL?

AFL stands for Australian Football League, which is the top professional league for Australian rules football. This sport is different from soccer and American football. It is played on an oval field, often the size of a cricket ground, with an oval-shaped ball. The main goal is to score points by kicking the ball through tall goalposts at each end of the field.

How is AFL Played?

AFL is played between two teams, each with 18 players on the field. The game is divided into four quarters, each lasting 20 minutes. Here are the basics of how the game is played:

1.Scoring Points: The main aim is to score points by kicking the ball through the opponent’s goalposts. There are four goalposts at each end of the field. Kicking the ball between the middle two tall posts scores 6 points, known as a “goal.” If the ball goes between a tall post and a shorter post, it scores 1 point, known as a “behind.”

2. Moving the Ball: Players can move the ball by kicking, handballing (punching the ball with a clenched fist), or running with it. However, when running with the ball, they must bounce it every 15 meters.

3.Tackling and Defense: Tackling is allowed, and players try to stop their opponents by grabbing them or knocking the ball out of their hands. There are rules to make sure tackles are safe.

4.Marking: If a player catches the ball after it has been kicked over 15 meters, it is called a “mark.” The player who marks the ball can take a free kick without being tackled.

History of AFL

The game of AFL has a rich history. It started in Melbourne, Australia, in the late 1850s as a way to keep cricketers fit during the winter months. Over time, the game evolved, and the first official league, the Victorian Football League (VFL), was established in 1896. In 1990, it became known as the Australian Football League (AFL) as the sport grew and teams from other states joined.

AFL Teams and Fans

The AFL has 18 teams from different cities and regions of Australia. Some of the most popular teams include the Collingwood Magpies, Richmond Tigers, Sydney Swans, and West Coast Eagles.
